Two gas pistons (think car-boot struts) sit on either side of the base. You pull the strap or handle at the foot or the side, depending on the design, and the pistons take the weight of the mattress as it lifts. It holds open on its own, so you’ve got both hands free. No spring noise, no straining your back, no mattress flopping shut. When pistons eventually wear, which takes years, they’re easy to replace.

End Lift, Side Lift, or Divan-Style: Which One's Right for Your Room?

A double ottoman fits roughly: two duvets, six pillows, a suitcase, off-season clothing, and still leaves room.
